On Tuesday we had a mission Zoom call which was our goodbye to the Alders. After the call we did service for an older lady in the area. We picked up sticks that the storm had blown down in her yard (there were a lot of them). After helping her pick up sticks we visited some people and went to dinner. We had dinner with the Heath family. They are also super amazing! They have a little boy named Sam and he is adorable. He was sitting by me during dinner and in the middle of the meal goes, "Do you want to see my muscles?" It was super funny because then he flexed his arms. He is only two…
On Wednesday we had district council. It is the first time I have ever been in an all Elders district. It was kind of entertaining. It was also the first district council, so we started to get to know each other. After district council we went and did service for a lady in the area. I played with her one year old, while Sister Maynard helped her draw things for an art class she teaches. Her one year old was adorable. She would bring me books to read to her. After service we had dinner with an older lady in the ward. We talked about crocheting and art while we were there. She also told us about her conversion story. She was fed up with her Church, so she stopped going and started praying that God would lead her where she needed to be. A few days later the missionaries knocked on her door. She said that during their first lesson she knew it was God's answer to her prayer. I love hearing people's conversion stories because it shows that God truly is in all the details of people's lives and knows everyone personally. After dinner we took some time to organize areabook (now Preach My Gospel). Ben in Newburgh also got baptized on Wednesday!!!
On Thursday we had an awesome lesson with our friend Luke. He is so ready to get baptized, but he has to get Sundays off work so he can come to church. He said he will hopefully get next Sunday off though, so we are excited! After that we re-planned our day like every two hours because things kept falling through. Scary moment of the day: Sister Maynard was going around a turn at the same time as a truck (coming in the opposite direction). The truck turned wide and she swerved to miss them and almost went straight into a ditch! I was slightly terrified because it all happened really quickly. It was a rather long day of contacting people, but nothing super interesting happened. We also did weekly planning.
On Friday we also went to visit a lot of people. We helped a lady in the area pack some things because she was moving. She kept telling us that things were really heavy and was so worried we were going to hurt ourselves. It did not help our case that we are both small, but she finally trusted us that things were not too heavy. Friday night we had dinner with the Swarens. They are a super sweet older couple. They both also have an amazing sense of humor. I think we spent probably half the time we were there laughing or trying not to laugh.
On Saturday life was actually busy. We went to help the lady that we helped pack on Friday actually move her stuff. We loaded the moving truck in the pouring rain. Anything that she did not want to get wet we waited for a dry moment and then ran with. After we helped her move we studied some and then drove to New Albany for our mini zone conference (Meet the Mcginns). Our mini zone conference was pretty awesome. All of the departing missionaries shared their testimony since we are not having an actual Zone conference this transfer. Our mission printed the new Preach My Gospel out for every missionary, so we all have a paper copy now (hard copies do not technically come out until December). There were a lot of cool stories shared (I LOVE stories) and some new perspectives on missionary work. After meeting the McGinns we drove back to our area. We visited some people and then went to the popcorn festival. We went street contacting at the festival and then watched the parade. It was awesome. They hung a huge American Flag suspended between the ladders on two different fire trucks. I was more entertained by the process of them getting it up there than when they actually got it secured. The parade was very entertaining. During the parade, they shot popcorn at everyone (it was raining popcorn). I am not exaggerating when I say the entire street was covered in popcorn. I had popcorn in my hair, down my dress, and in my shoes. One of the highlights of the parade was that we were sitting by this young family. People were throwing candy and one of the kids took it all and would not share with his younger brother. The little boy was so sad, but someone had given me a pack of M&Ms, so I got to make him smile! He gave me a hug, and it made me so happy!! After the parade we went back to our apartment and ate dinner. (It was after 8pm.)
On Sunday we saw so many miracles. We had a late lunch with the Harvey family. The dad is super sarcastic. Their mom also only speaks Portuguese, so the dad and daughter translate. It was super entertaining. After lunch we went to visit people in the area. We decided to impulsively go visit one of the people the prior Sisters had recently stopped teaching because she was super busy. She came outside and was so excited to see us. The first thing she told us was that she had been Word of Wisdom clean for ten days!! She also said she would text us to set up a lesson. We did not talk to her long because we were standing in the pouring rain, but it was an awesome interaction. It was super exciting because we have been praying to find people to teach! After visiting her we went to visit an inactive member. We ended up setting up a lesson to teach him and his kids! They are a super amazing family. His daughter also took us to see their baby goats and chickens! After that it started pouring again. We headed back to our apartment for the night after visiting people.
It rained most of the week, but I love rain! There are so many tender mercies and joys that we can see in life if we simply look for them. This week at mini zone conference Sister McGinn shared a quote by Ronald A. Rasband. The quote said, "Nothing in missionary work comes until you find someone to teach." I really liked this quote because we have definitely been on the finding grind in Corydon! We are finally starting to get some potential people to teach (although we still do not officially have any new friends).
